Couples go through challenges during different points in the relationship. These
challenges can look like moving in together for the first time, having their first child,
parenting differences, children leaving the home, intimacy issues, infidelity issues, and
communication issues, just to name a few. Here at Living Within Therapy we see all kinds
of couples, even couples who report they have a good relationship and need some extra
support to iron out a few differences they are currently facing. We also see couples who
are wanting to engage in some work before they get married to discuss some of the more
important conversations such as parenting, children, and finances.
Our approach to couples counseling is practical and efficient. We often like to set agendas
at the beginning of our sessions to ensure both parties are heard. We will explore long-
standing patterns in the relationship and teach you conflict resolution and
communication skills. We can help navigate each individual's unmet needs in order to
create a deeper understanding of the relationship dynamics. We will also assist in creating
new problem-solving techniques that lead to areas of compromise and understanding as
well as give tools to help rebuild trust and admiration for your partner.
It should be noted that we meet with each person separately at the beginning of our work
together to do some further assessment as couple’s therapy may not be the best treatment
at the time. Instead, we might recommend individual therapy to begin and then once
some healing has taken place we would then start couple’s therapy. Please be sure to tell
your therapist if you are experiencing any kind of abuse in your relationship. Our goal is
your goal, and sometimes couple’s therapy might look like navigating separation
peacefully which we can help you with as well.
